Camping by the river at Trout Camp

Camping by the river at Trout Camp in Suches, Georgia

People brought campers, buses, and tents to Trout Camp. They parked them by the river and stayed for a week. Some people slept in their cars waking up stiff, cold, and hungry. We went trout fishing, camped, partied, threw horseshoes, and drank a lot of beer.

Campers at Trout Camp in the North Georgia Mountains

Campers lined up beside the creek.

The river ran fast and wide. There were places to fish and places to wash dishes.

Fishing at Trout Camp in the North Georgia Mountains

Gomer did some early morning trout fishing.

He caught enough for a few people to join him for breakfast -- but most of us ate bacon and eggs.

Look at those Marlboro pants! We used to send in our cigarette coupons to get Marlboro branded merchandise. I still have my beach towel.

Cooker at Trout Camp

There was probably half of a pig in this cooker.

We also grilled hundreds of hot dogs, hamburgers, and chickens on that thing.

Cooking at Trout Camp in the North Georgia Mountains

Smoke in the air

Looked like Len was cooking up a bunch of hot dogs and hamburgers. He was always cooking up something.

Bringing in firewood at Trout Camp

Billy brought in some wood for the fire.

Someone had to do the heavy lifting and this guy was perfect for the job.

Eating at Trout Camp in the North Georgia Mountains

Hambone and Jill stood by why Gary ate.

There was always plenty of food -- we never went hungry.

Raymond was getting a bite to eat. We had meat and all the side dishes you could want.

Trout for supper

Billy showed us his trout.

We did more than just play horseshoes at Trout Camp. Some of us actually went fishing! Look at these two trout that Bill caught. I bet they were some good eating.

Tony, Marie, Eddie, and Jerry looked cold standing beside the river.

We had a lot of good times by the river.

Trout Camp in the North Georgia Mountains

Brian and Frank had a comfortable camp.

They planned this camping trip for weeks. With four kids -- Mitzi, April, Rose, and Keith -- they had to pack a lot of extra clothes and food.

Big Ray at Trout Camp in the North Georgia Mountains

Big Ray was ready for Trout Camp.

He brought his family every year and that was the only time we ever saw them.

Close up of Ray at Trout Camp

I never saw him mad or stressed out. That was a good thing because he was a big guy. For more close up portraits of people, visit the Up Close page.

Jeremy was a fisherman from way back.

That was a very nice trout that he caught.

Tony's van was parked in the mud. The road was one long mud hole.

Rusty at Trout Camp

Blue jeans, a blue denim shirt, and a blue river made Rusty's red beard stand out.

Unique hat at Trout Camp in the North Georgia Mountains

This guy's hat had a trout on it.

It looked like horns, but was a fish. We all wanted one of these unique hats.

Trout Camp in the snow

Trout Camp in the snow was cold but beautiful.

Sometimes it snowed on us while camping at Trout Camp. March and April weather was always unpredictable. One day was freezing and the next was like June. For more pictures of snow, visit the Snow Days page.

The road through Trout Camp

A dry spring

This road was usually a giant mud hole but it looked pretty good in this picture.

Camps lined the river bank for a mile or two. We partied late into the night -- and only a few fell into the water.

Janice almost fell into the river.

I was walking on the rocks and slipped on some moss. I recovered my balance just in time.

This man stopped to show us a beautiful fish.

Here is a chart with different species of fish that live in North Georgia. I think this one is a rainbow.

I wish I knew the man's name. If you know this fellow, please email me.
