Lake Nottely and parties at the Cliffs

Lake Nottely -- Union County, Georgia

Driving ten miles to Lake Nottely was too far to go for most people that hung out at the End of the Pavement.

Every now and then, a few of us would venture over that way.

Boat on Lake Nottely

A day on the lake with a red boat

Timmy, Billy, Doug, and Brian were fixing to take me for a ride. We had some fun days at the End of 325 on Lake Nottely. That was a favorite gathering spot for many years. We went swimming, sunbathed, put in boats, had picnics, and camped.

We were pulling skiers around that day. I tried water skiing and managed to get up but could not hold on for long. Maybe five seconds.

Doug was really good at it. He could jump the wakes!

Timmy was having a ball with the wind in his face and a cold drink in his hand.

I am sure that is a Pepsi.

Camping at Lake Nottley

Camping on Lake Nottely

We camped, went boating, and drank beer. We did not do much fishing. See the hunting and fishing page for pictures of fish.

The lake was blue and clear. Since I loved to swim, this was one of my favorite spots in Union County. My girlfriends and their children came here a lot with me to sunbathe, swim, and socialize.

Doug and TImmy had fun speeding around in the boat.

Be careful about drinking alcohol on TVA property -- it is illegal. For more information about Lake Nottely, visit the TVA website.

Camp spot on Lake Nottely

End of the Pavement bunch camped on Lake Nottely

It was very rare for the End of the Pavement bunch to camp on the lake.

Raymond, Eddie, Tony, Bart, Phil, myself, and others enjoyed the change of scenery on this weekend.

Camping on Lake Nottely

This spot on Lake Nottely was behind Johnson's Store off of Murphy Highway.

We had three or four boats so that everyone could fish, ski, or go for a ride.

I loved the water and anything to do with boating and swimming.

The Cliffs at Lake Nottely

Another good place to party on Lake Nottely was the Cliffs. The height from the top of the cliffs to the water could range from a few feet to thirty feet, depending on water levels and your position. Swimmers could get in or out from the shore which curved around to the left creating cliffs that spiraled upwards. It was not a good place for non-swimmers or children because the water was deep and there was a drop off.

We partied at the Cliffs a lot back in the 1970s and 1980s. I don't know if the laws changed or if they just starting enforcing them, but drinking alcohol on the lake became a no-no. After that, we stayed away.

Bikers at Lake Nottely

Joe C (with white belt) had a Kawasaki but there were plenty of Harley's at the party, too. I was not interested in motorcycles. I was too busy checking out the half naked guys.

Hambone at the Cliffs

Men at the Cliffs

Hambone, Terry, Bush, and several more men gathered at the Cliffs on Lake Nottely. There was a cool rope swing if you had the guts to use it.

Hambone was not wearing a shirt. Shortly after this picture, he wrecked and got cut up pretty bad. He also got into a knife fight. I don't think he went without a shirt in public after all that happened.

Cricket and Bush at Lake Nottely

It is suiting that Cricket is the only one on this website wearing a bikini.

She was free-spirited and out-going. Plus she had the figure for it.

Bush was one of a bunch of brothers. They didn't come around the End of the Pavement very often -- probably because of some long ago feud or maybe they just had other things to do. The brothers were always polite and friendly. I knew the younger ones because of Joe Fox. He grew up with them.

See more pictures of the old days.
