Brian Payne at The End of the Pavement
By Janice Boling

Brian Payne and his kids were regulars at the End of the Pavement.

Brian was a generous man, the life of any party, and he would never turn down a dare. He had his own brand of karate, loved to wrestle, and was the life of the party.

Brian also has a page in the After 2009 section of this website. Visit it for photos by Trish Garrett. She took some great photos of Brian Payne in more recent years.

Brian took the kids to trout camp and to horseshoe games at the End of the Pavement.

Keith, Rose, and Brian

Keith and Rose are all grown up.

Brian was very proud of both his children. They made a nice looking family.

Brian with 500 beers

Brian was getting ready for his birthday party -- with at least 40 cases of beer.

This stack was two deep! When we bought this much beer, we had to fill-out and sign a form at the beer store before they would sell it to us. It stated that we were not planning on reselling it. I guess this helped prevent boot-leggers.

At that time Union County was dry. We had to drive 25 miles to get to a beer store usually going to Nanny Mules across the line on 180 or Windy Hill in Blue Ridge. Sometimes we went all the way to Andrews in North Carolina where beer was actually sold on Sunday.

Looks like they are ready for some excitement.

Brian relaxes at the EOP

Brian was relaxing but what was he sitting on?

Maybe a lawn chair or is it a recliner?

Rose on a sunny day

Little Rose enjoys the sunshine at the End of the Pavement.

She was around a lot when she was little. I think she moved away to New Hampshire for a while.

boy in the weeds

Keith was about five years old in this picture.

Did I catch him peeing in the weeds?

Or maybe he was trying to show me something. I hope I did not embarrass the boy.

Brian was a fascinating person. He had a huge imagination and never ran out of ideas. Most of them were outrageous and fun. A few were destructive.

Even when he ruined a good chain saw, it was worth it for the memories.

I will never forget it as long as I live. Brian stood up and declared that he was going to cut up a car. Darrell said he would help and they proceeded to begin. It made a horrible racket and sparks went flying as they tore into the metal.

Cutting up a car at 2:00 a.m. -- the middle of the night for most folks. I am sure people could hear that sound for miles. I wonder why they didn't call the police.

This was taken at a horsehoe tournament we had inside Gary's workshop. Looks like a good father son game.

Brian was always having some sort of adventure. See pictures of our trip through the wilderness.
